BASF strives to be the best partner for our customers in the Flavor & Fragrance industry by providing biodegradable solutions world-wide: All our available BASF fragrance ingredients are readily or inherent, ultimate biodegradable according to OECD Guidelines. As such, we support our customers to use ingredients that do not persist in the environment.
Differentiation of biodegradability according to OECD and IFRA Guidelines
Readily Biodegradable
≥ 60% / ≥ 70 % biodegradation depending on the respective OECD 301 / 310 within 28 days
and
The 10 or 14 day window must be met
Inherent, Ultimate Biodegradable (Biodegradable)
When the pass level criterion is fulfilled but the 10 or 14 day window criterion is not
or
When the results after 28 days indicate that the pass level criterion is almost fulfilled (i.e., 58% / 68%)
or
≥ 60% / ≥ 70 % biodegradation depending on the respective OECD 301 / 310 within 60 days
Poorly Biodegradable
Biodegradability criteria do not meet the conditions for readily or inherent, ultimate biodegradability.
