Sustainability Performance: Enabling more sustainable Creations

Companies in the Flavor & Fragrance (F&F) industry value ingredients that combine improved sustainability with reliability and competitiveness.

BASF, as a leading aroma ingredients supplier, ensures that every product empowers customers to create new formulations with enhanced sustainability performance—without compromising olfactory performance and quality. This commitment extends across a broad portfolio of aroma ingredients and includes products that enable customers to lower the environmental impact of their products in several ways.

Our Aroma Ingredients enable our customers to formulate fragrance and flavor mixtures with lower environmental impact while complying with responsible sourcing standards.

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

We provide Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) values for our conventional, rPCF, and BMBcert® aroma ingredients The compliance of our PCF calculation methodology with the respective ISO norms and the TfS PCF calculation guideline for Chemical sector is certified by TÜV Rheinland. As we are able to provide annually updated PCF values dating back to the year 2020, this enables our customers to benchmark historical data against current values and effectively track and report their emissions reduction over time.
Conventional aroma ingredients feature efficient production and continuous process optimization. Our facilities use natural gas as the main energy source, and most raw materials are sourced from natural gas or oil, which results in PCFs being significantly lower than production based on coal as raw material and for energy production.
Our rPCF and BMBcert® solutions come with PCF reductions of approximately 10.0–15.0% and 30.0–60.0% respectively, compared to the conventional products. These reductions are achieved through partnerships with suppliers for low-PCF utilities and raw materials, using a mass balance approach in production.

Renewable Carbon Options

We offer an innovative range of products that utilize biomass as feedstock. Biomass absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during growth—a process called biogenic carbon uptake. This not only reduces reliance on fossil resources but also helps close the carbon loop by sequestering CO2 that would otherwise contribute to climate change. Among our renewable carbon options are:

  • Isobionics® product portfolio: Flavors and fragrances produced via fermentation, a proprietary biotechnology, from sugar. Find out more
  • Micadelva™: Made up of 80% renewable carbon, qualifying it as a naturally derived ingredient according to ISO 16128-1 that provides guidelines on technical definitions and criteria for natural and organic cosmetic ingredients and products. Find out more
  • BMBcert®: Fossil feedstocks are replaced with renewable alternatives via a certified mass balance approach that ensures supply chain traceability. Find out more

Biodegradable Ingredients

All our available BASF fragrance ingredients are biodegradable according to OECD guidelines. In this way, we support our customers in using ingredients that do not remain in the environment. We will continue this path with our new ingredients and thereby contribute to a more sustainable future in the industry.
Our commitment to biodegradability extends to the new fragrance ingredients we are developing. By making biodegradability a stop-go decision criterion in our R&D projects for new fragrances we are actively addressing concerns about pollution and foster circularity.

Responsible Production

BASF is committed to upholding human rights, fostering safe workplaces, and maintaining global labor standards across its operations and supply chain. This dedication is lived through rigorous management systems, supplier audits, and robust compliance measures. Transparency remains a cornerstone, supported by regular independent assessments from organizations like EcoVadis and CDP.
Furthermore, BASF actively participates in the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative, which promotes responsible sourcing and supply chain transparency across the chemical industry by establishing standardized sustainability assessments and audits for suppliers. By integrating these ethical and sustainability standards—including those defined by TfS— BASF enables its customers to create responsible value chains and meet their own sustainability targets.
Through these efforts, BASF advances both its partners’ and society’s sustainable development.
